1. 突出开放性。书面表达题目将越来越摒弃早期那种“汉译英”式的题目，而会提供更大的自由空间，让学生都有话可写，同时激发学生的写作欲望，唤醒与强化写作主体的意识，启发思维，拓展心灵。这类题目让学生的写作空间更广泛，便于学生表达真实情感，充分展示个性，这一点与新课标的要求一致。
2. 突出时代性。无论从认识、道德伦理、形象展示、哲理思考等方面，书面表达都会体现一定时代性的价值取向。也许有的同学会认为关注时代性(共性)与提倡发展学生的个性有矛盾，其实个性化色彩并不排斥时代性，个性化也要求关注时代性，两者是相互通融的。现代中学生应善于关注自己的小天地，同时放眼大时代。提倡时代感同样可展示真善美的自我，否则写出的都是大话、空话、套话，融入不了个性。
3. 突出实用性。细心的同学可能会发现，往年的英语书面表达在设计时会考虑要考查哪些词汇、哪些句式，而近年来的题目则倾向于考察如何解决某一问题，更注重了实用性。留言条、书信、日记等常见应用文普遍受到关注，电话记录、采访提纲、演讲稿、说明书、海报等应用文也不容忽视。我们还要注意到，一般的看图作文、记叙文、说明文、议论文也各有其"实用性"的一面。
4. 突出教育性。书面表达的材料和提示语将更多地体现教育性，以便让学生在读题和写作的过程中得到熏陶感染和教育。
